Concrete vs. Pavers: Which Is Right for Your Patio or Driveway?

September 12, 2026 HDZ Construction Company LLC

Homeowners across Toms River and Ocean County often ask us the same question: concrete or pavers? Both are good choices, and the right answer depends on the space, your budget, and how you want it to look and age.

Poured concrete is the practical option. It goes down fast, costs less per square foot, and makes a smooth, uniform surface that's easy to sweep and shovel. Done right — compacted base, proper thickness, control joints, and good drainage — it holds up for decades. Its weakness is cracking. Concrete is rigid, so ground movement and freeze-thaw cycles can eventually crack it, and a cracked slab is hard to patch invisibly.

Pavers are made of individual units set over a compacted stone base, so they flex slightly with the ground instead of cracking. If one stains or settles, you lift it and replace it. They also come in many colors, shapes, and patterns, which is why they're popular for patios, pool decks, and front walkways where appearance matters. The trade-offs are a higher up-front cost and some upkeep: joints may need fresh sand every few years, and weeds will find any gap.

For a driveway that mostly needs to be flat and durable, concrete is hard to beat on cost. For a patio, a front entry, or a pool deck where you want the surface to be a feature, pavers usually win. Many of our customers use both — concrete for the driveway, pavers for the patio and walk.

Whichever you choose, the base is what decides how long it lasts. A well-compacted stone base and correct drainage slope matter more than the surface material on top. Call (732) 807-9847 and we'll look at your yard and give you a free written estimate for either option.
